This paper examines the influence of medical practices such as diagnosis and drug therapy on the lives of former Hansen’s disease patients Japan.<br />
After 1943, with the appearance of the leprostatic drug Promine, Hansen’s disease was transformed into a curable condition. As a result, medical treatment of the condition has undergone a major transformation internationally, greatly affecting patients’ lives. Looking at the experiences of patients who have received continuous treatment, however, the course of the disease is not linear, and in the face of uncertainty such as the possibility of “leprosy reaction” and recurrence, patients have had to undergo long-term medical treatment. In addition, after the treatment, aftereffects persist in the body of former patients, obscuring the line between the cured and the sick. This paper describes the life histories of a group of patients by focusing on these important changes. In doing so, I take a different approach from previous studies that have focused on Hansen’s disease as a purely social and cultural phenomenon. <br />
The following four analytic points emerge through the description of the five case studies. (1) The understanding of diseases and the body, and their interpretations by patients, are inseparable from medical practices. (2) New medical treatments make the recovery process increasingly complicated, and at the same time more irregular than the simple linear model (suggested by notions, such as “patient role”). (3) The gap between medical knowledge, and the “real” bodies of the patients emerge in various medical practices of diagnosis and treatment. (4) As a result, a gap emerges between the medical cure and the cure demanded by patients.<br />
The intertwining of various materials and practices obstructs the understanding of the body-as-a-whole and at the same time reconstructs the patient&#039;s disease as well as the framework of treatment. This paper therefore argues that to understand the cure for Hansen’s disease we should neither reduce it to a subjective problem of the patient nor to the objective problem based on medical knowledge, but rather account for the interactive process of patients and practices.

本発表では、「DIYバイオ」と呼ばれる市民科学活動がいかに科学を複数化しているかを日本国内の事例から考察する。DIYバイオとは大学や企業などの専門的な研究施設の外で市民が行う生物学的実践であり、身の周りのものを組み合わせて高額な器具や試薬の代わりに機能するツールの製作に挑戦している。本発表では、科学実験の手順や精密機械の仕組みを解体し、モノの模倣と再配置を通した創造的な翻訳としてDIYバイオを議論する。

This presentation aims to discuss how the process of classification of leprosy into disease
types emerged from the interaction of patients’ bodies and technologies from the late 19th
century to the middle of the 20th century in Japan.
Leprosy (Hansen’s disease) is a disease that brings on variable symptoms. To deal with
some of the symptoms, medical researchers tried to classify the patients’ bodies. However, it
was difficult to construct a stable classification, because the expression of the disease in the
patients’ bodies had unforeseen complexities, including (1) transitions between distinct disease
types, and (2) the mixed or indeterminate cases which had both characteristics of two typical
disease types. This was an aporia. Namely that the trajectories of bodies changing over time did
not correspond to rigid and timeless classification.
It was not only the bodies of patient themselves, but also other human and non-human
actors that intervened in making these medical classifications. In the process of making and
modifying disease types of leprosy, multiple actors――human bodies, bacteria, emulsions,
microscopes, and so on――were mobilized. The combination of the elements that were used to
make boundaries between leprosy patients in turn affected the classification practices and made
the boundaries of bodies fluid.
This presentation analyzes the classification practices by medical researchers from the
standpoint of STS. It will consider how the boundaries between leprosy types have been swayed
through the classification processes which were entangled with bodies and many other things,
and, at the same time, how the medical researchers’ viewpoint on leprosy had changed.
